Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet, formerly Susan Richards Ballet School, is synonymous with ballet in Scarborough and the local area. Founded in 1964, the school has taught thousands of pupils, spreading the joy of dance to generations. With highly qualified teachers, dancers of all ages have the opportunity to learn from former professionals in a supportive and friendly environment.
Learning to dance is not only fun and enjoyable but also comes with many other benefits. Taking a class at YCSB will improve your flexibility, agility, strength and is a great way to make new friends.
With a focus on ballet, YCSB also offers Jazz and Contemporary. These classes are offered as a supplement to ballet lessons and allow pupils to experience different dance styles and become more versatile.
Many students have gained acceptance into full time vocational schools and have gone on to have careers in dance, as performers, choreographers and teachers, and in national ballet companies.
As a long established school, we are privileged to have former students enroll their own children, so that they can also discover a love for dance. Families have been dancing with us for generations, a testament to the exceptional teaching and friendly atmosphere at Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet.
Helen became Principal of the school in 2006. A former pupil, she went on to full-time vocational training at the renowned Central School of Ballet in London and graduated with a Dancers Diploma and a contract as a Soloist with Corps de Ballet at the Stadttheater Oberhausen in Germany. Helen returned to the UK in 2002, after 16 years dancing, choreographing and teaching in Germany and began teaching for Susan Richards.
Upon retiring, Susan passed her wonderful school onto Helen.
With the help of her wonderful team, Helen has continued to provide the exceptional classes the school has become known for.
